Nissan’s performance division has worked its magic on an unlikely candidate — transforming the humble Leaf into a sportier, more desirable EV.
When Nissan introduced the third-generation Leaf last year, it completely changed the perception of its quirky and affordable battery-electric vehicle.
The improvements went far beyond a simple redesign. Along with a bold new exterior, the updated Leaf arrived with major advancements in battery technology, efficiency, and driving range, making it a much stronger competitor in the growing EV market.

But even those significant upgrades don’t compare to Nissan’s latest surprise: a NISMO version of the Leaf.
For the first time, Nissan’s everyday commuter EV is getting a performance-inspired makeover that gives it an entirely new personality.
A surprising NISMO transformation
Nissan has introduced the new Leaf NISMO exclusively for the Japanese market, marking the first time the third-generation model has received the company’s famous performance treatment.
Previous generations of the Leaf never carried the NISMO badge, keeping Nissan’s motorsport-inspired division separate from its practical electric hatchback.
This time, things are different.
While the Leaf NISMO doesn’t receive a power increase, Nissan has made several mechanical upgrades designed to improve the driving experience.
More than just a cosmetic package
Unlike many appearance-focused performance editions, the Leaf NISMO is not simply a collection of stickers and badges.
Nissan has developed unique motor tuning and regenerative braking calibration to provide sharper throttle response and a more engaging driving feel.
The suspension has also been upgraded with NISMO-specific springs, stabilizers, improved bushings, and swing valve-equipped dampers. These changes are designed to make the Leaf feel more responsive and composed through corners.
Combined with lightweight Enkei wheels and grippier Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires, the setup gives the electric hatchback noticeably sportier handling.
It may not turn the Leaf into a track-focused performance machine, but it adds character to a vehicle that has traditionally prioritized comfort and efficiency over excitement.
A much more aggressive appearance
The biggest transformation, however, comes from the Leaf NISMO’s styling upgrades.
Outside, the sporty EV receives redesigned front corner and lower door finishers, a unique rear bumper, and an eye-catching ducktail spoiler.
According to Nissan, these aerodynamic changes are functional as well, helping increase downforce while reducing aerodynamic resistance.
The NISMO identity continues with signature Arterial Magma red accents on the mirrors and spoiler details. Combined with the exclusive Stealth Gray exterior color, the Leaf takes on a much more aggressive appearance.
A sportier cabin to match
Inside, Nissan carries the NISMO theme forward with matching red accents, exclusive Recaro seats, a TailorFit steering wheel, and plenty of NISMO branding throughout the cabin.
The interior transformation gives the quiet electric commuter a more emotional and performance-focused atmosphere.
For a car that already stood out with unique design elements like its wheels and distinctive taillights, the NISMO treatment adds another layer of personality.
The Leaf may not win races because of the NISMO badge, but it certainly becomes a more exciting EV.
Availability and pricing
For now, Nissan has only confirmed the Leaf NISMO for Japan.
Pricing starts at 6,601,100 yen (approximately $40,000 USD).
Whether Nissan eventually brings the NISMO version to other markets, including the United States, remains uncertain. But if it does happen, it could give the Leaf a new level of appeal among EV buyers looking for something practical without being boring.
